SME

The complete methodology behind everything we teach — slow, methodical, ethical.

SME — Slow, Methodical, Ethical — is the operating standard behind everything Observed Patterns builds and teaches. It is not a personality type, a credential, or an aspiration. It's a description of the specific conditions that produce work which is genuinely what it claims to be.

The methodology does not care whether you call yourself an SME practitioner. It cares whether the work is actually built the way it says it is.

The Problem It Solves

Most organizations and individuals already want to work carefully and ethically — the wanting was never the missing piece. What's missing is the architecture: a specific, operational definition of what "careful" and "ethical" actually require in practice, with clear lines for what violates each principle. SME provides that architecture.

Core Concepts Within SME

Slow

The work moves at the pace required for genuine completion at each stage before the next stage begins. Not leisurely, not indifferent to deadlines — paced by what real completion requires, not by urgency.

Methodical

Working in deliberate sequence, confirming genuine completion at each stage before proceeding, rather than assuming it.

Ethical

Values held consistently rather than selectively; the work is accurate about what it actually is, not framed to look better than it is.

How the Three Interact

They aren't independent; they create each other. Slow makes Methodical possible. Methodical makes Ethical sustainable. Ethical holds the other two accountable — without it, Slow and Methodical curdle into rigidity and perfectionism for their own sake.

Practical Examples

A course that promises a specific outcome without genuinely being built to deliver it — a Methodical/Ethical failure, the gap between claim and substance.

An organization that adds "Slow, Methodical, Ethical" to a values statement but doesn't change how decisions actually get made under pressure — the organization largely continues operating as it did before, now with additional language available to describe what it is doing.

Skipping a genuine completion check because a deadline is close — a Slow violation, even if nothing else about the work looks rushed.

Founder Notes

SME is described as "not the product. It is the standard" — every course, book, and program Observed Patterns builds is measured against it. Notably, the framework explicitly states it cannot be implemented in an organization by mandate alone; it spreads through demonstrated practice, not announcement.
